9/ This Week in Web3forGood
A weekly roundup of the ways Web3 tech can used to make the world a better place.
Welcome to Week 9 in Web3forGood,
Wow, did anyone else attend the Global Digital Develop Forum this week? This is the third year we’ve attended, but something noticeably stood out this year - web3! It was the subject of multiple main stage panels, and speakers covered everything from responsible digital development and best practices for nonprofits to DAOs for climate action and more. Not everyone agrees that web3 tech was a good thing (or even *a* thing at all), but one thing was clear: people are ready to talk about web3 and how - or if - it can make the world a better place.
If you found us from #GDDF2022, welcome! We’re happy to have you here.
This week, we have a fantastic conversation to share with Jon Behar, Strategic Advisor at The Life You Can Save, a nonprofit that is a true pioneer when it comes to crypto philanthropy. Jon spoke with us about his personal journey, The Life You Can Save’s mission, and why web3 was a natural fit. Read the full conversation here, and if you are interested in learning more, send Jon a message on LinkedIn.
What’s next for Web3ForGood? A lot of you have been asking. After 9 (!) weeks of experimenting and lots of new faces around here, we will be spending some time next week creating our very own roadmap for Web3ForGood. If you have ideas or want to be a part of it, send us a note. We are growing quickly and would love to hear from you. Really. Send us an email at web3forgood@gmail.com.
WAGMI (we are going to make an impact)!

🌊 Maximizing Impact with Effective Altruism and Crypto Philanthropy: A Conversation with Jon Behar, Strategic Advisor at The Life You Can Save
When a part-time employee set up The Life You Can Save’s first crypto wallet back in 2018, at first… not much happened. But in 2021, that suddenly changed. For Strategic Advisor Jon Behar, it was obvious that crypto philanthropy presented a major opportunity for the organization, which uses effective altruism to improve the lives of the 700 million people in the world who live below the poverty line, to significantly increase its impact. He and his team made the decision to go all-in.
One year later, The Life You Can Save is a true leader in the crypto philanthropy space, modeling and continuously pushing the boundaries of what web3 technology can do for nonprofits and the causes they support - and sharing the lessons they learn along the way.
Web3ForGood spoke with Behar about those lessons, why effective altruism resonates with crypto natives, what’s next for The Life You Can Save, why he’s bullish on POAP NFTs for nonprofits, and his vision for how web3 can be used to make the world a better place.
Can you introduce yourself? What is your role at The Life You Can Save?
My name is Jon Behar, and my current role at The Life You Can Save is strategic advisor. I've played a variety of roles at the organization, and been with it since it was established as a nonprofit in 2013. My current role is about helping to shape and implement the organization's big-picture priorities and strategies. Right now, that mostly involves building out our crypto philanthropy program and launching a variety of managed funds later this year. These are funds that will allow donors to give to multiple charities that all work in the same cause area with one single donation.
