🔍TLDR: Self-Custody
New to Web3? Welcome! TLDR is where we offer a simplified explanation of a term used often in this newsletter or a big topic in the news this week. If there's anything you're curious about, reply and let us know.
Self-custody means you are fully in control of your own cryptocurrency or digital assets—no third party or intermediary like a bank or exchange holds it for you. Instead, you manage it directly using a private key, which is a special code that only you have. This key gives you access to your funds and allows you to send or receive assets as needed.
Since you’re in control, you don’t have to worry about someone else mismanaging or losing your assets. However, the responsibility is entirely on you to keep your private key safe. If you lose it, there’s no recovery option—your funds are gone forever. It’s like being your own bank, with full control but also full responsibility.
Self-custody is important because it gives you true ownership of your digital assets without relying on a centralized authority. It promotes financial independence and ensures that no one else can freeze, censor, or access your funds without your permission.
TLDR: Self-custody means you control your own cryptocurrency by managing your private key, promoting true ownership and financial independence but requiring careful responsibility to avoid losing access to your assets.
