In the news this week: Bitcoin might be decoupling from the stock market, autocracies are thinking about crypto, and the ReFi community is reflecting and re-evaluating, which is a good thing. Our takes on all of this + more, below.

๐ What Weโre Thinking About
๐ Bitcoin decoupling from stocks?
Big, if true (DLNews). This week, Bitcoin started to behave less like an equity instrument and more like a structurally differentiated asset (Bitcoin Magazine). A true decoupling would support the narrative that Bitcoin is digital gold (DLNews). But is it real or just a temporary thing? Experts say it's too early to really tell (Decrypt).
๐ฑ Green crypto mining
Bhutan is exploring how to do it with the goal of to boost the economy, create jobs, and reduce brain drain (Reuters). Positioned between India and China, the Himalayan nation has earned millions from crypto investmentsโsome of which funded government salariesโand sees digital currencies mined with clean energy as a contribution to the green economy. Each coin mined in Bhutan offsets one mined with fossil fuels, positioning the country as a sustainable player in the global crypto space since it began investing in 2019. We love to see it.
๐ช Stablecoins
Imagine if we had a newsletter without stablecoin news? This week is not the week. PayPay is making big moves. The company announced its going to pay 3.7% annual yield on its stablecoin $PYUSD in an effort to drive adoption as competition heats up, AND its doubling down on its partnership with Coinbase (CoinDesk, WatcherGuru). Ripple launched a new stablecoin on Aave (The Defiant). Meanwhile, next week, Circle (the firm behind $USDC) is set to launch a new payments and cross border remittance network aimed at banks, fintechs, payment service providers, remittance providers, and USDC strategic partners (CoinDesk). Still need convincing that stablecoins are worth your attention? โThere were more stablecoin transactions in the first quarter of 2025 than there were Visa transactions,โ as reported by The Defiant.
โ Autocracies and crypto
For the most part, we love to talk about how crypto is being used to level the financial playing field and connect everyone in the world to the global financial system. Financial freedom is the goal. But what about when it's not? Both China and Russia were in the news this week for their evolving approach to crypto policy (Reuters, CryptoSlate). As the Financial Freedom Report writes on the China front, โWhile the regime debates how to manage its seized digital assets, the trading of Bitcoin and other digital assets remains banned for Chinese citizens on the mainland. Reports indicate that local governments have quietly sold confiscated Bitcoin and other digital assets through private companies to bolster their dwindling budgets. If true, this exposes the hypocrisy of a regime banning digital assets for its people while exploiting them as a strategic revenue source for the stateโ (Financial Freedom Report). In Russia, access to crypto investing is set to be restricted to include only the nationโs financial elite (CryptoSlate). We donโt think this was part of Satoshiโs vision (Bitcoin.org).
๐ Crypto is macro
And we just discovered a really cool newsletter all about it (Crypto is Macro Now). News to know this week: Bretton Woods institutions must reorient their focus, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who emphasized that organizations like the IMF and World Bank need to address trade imbalances and safeguard the value of fiat currencies from exchange rate risks โ ok this isnโt explicitly crypto, BUT it's all intertwined (Cointelegraph). Political reports that the European Central Bank and the European Commission are not happy about Trumpโs approach to crypto in America, writing that his total support โrisks causing financial contagion that could blow up the European economyโ (Politico). Or as CryptoSlate reports, โThe ECB warns that Trump's crypto policies could undermine EU monetary sovereignty by amplifying US-backed stablecoin presence.โ Meanwhile, in the US, a draft of a crypto market structure bill is coming soon, according to reporting from Unchained. We donโt know what it all means yet, but one thing is certain: it will mean something, on a global scale.
๐ฃ ReFi realignment
Itโs been a weird last few months (years?) in crypto, with many being turned off by the seeming financialization of literally everything and the never-ending stream of memecoins and betting market news. Weโve been saying this for a while, but thatโs not why the people that we know are here! Everything happening on the outside has, at least, pushed many projects to look inward, to re-evaluate the roadmaps, if you will, and itโs been refreshing to watch what unfolds. This week, CARBON Copy called for a new approach to ReFi solutions, pointing out that financial incentives are not enough to convince people to be a part of the movement, AND even if they were, we make it so hard for people to get involved. Hard truth! Itโs great to see this conversation and others like it happening. Another movement weโve been following closely is Ethereum Localism, the idea that Ethereumโs decentralized infrastructure can strengthen local economies, governance systems, and social networks, which Monty Merlin Bryant describes in detail here (ReFi DAO). In his words: โThis moment of transition presents a unique opportunity to reimagine how local economies function, how communities coordinate and relate, and how technology like Ethereum can serve as infrastructure for more participatory, resilient, and regenerative systems.โ Speaking of re-evaluating, even Vitalik is doing it (The Defiant).
