New to Web3? Welcome! TLDR is where we offer a simplifed explanation of a term used often in this newsletter. If there's anything you're curious about, reply and let us know.
Web3 airdrops are a way to give out free cryptocurrency or digital tokens to a lot of people. Imagine a new game giving out free items to get people interested. In Web3, instead of items, it's usually digital currency or tokens. These are given to people who use a certain platform, join an event, or belong to a community. It's like getting a free sample of a new product to try. This helps more people learn about and use the new token.
For example, in 2021, ENS (Ethereum Name Service), which gives people easy-to-read names for their cryptocurrency addresses like a custom domain name, distributed free ENS tokens to people who had registered ENS names before. This rewarded early users and got more people interested in using ENS.
TLDR: Web3 airdrops are free distributions of cryptocurrency tokens to promote a new project. It's like getting free items in a game to attract more players.
